Bringing Your Family to Spain: How Reunification Works for Non-EU Residents

Application Modernization Services

You moved to Spain first. Maybe it was a job offer, a remote work permit or a retirement plan, and the idea was always that your family would follow once you had settled in. Spanish law has a procedure for exactly that, called family reunification. It is fair and well structured, but it has a timeline that catches many families by surprise: it is not available on day one.

The first year belongs to you

The key rule is about the person already living in Spain, whom the law calls the sponsor. Under article 68 of Spain’s immigration regulations, the sponsor can apply for family reunification once they have lived in Spain for at least one year and have applied to extend their residence for at least another year. The permit for the family is not granted until that renewal has actually been approved, or until the sponsor holds long-term residence.

A common online myth says the family members themselves need to have spent time in Spain first. They do not: the time requirement applies to the sponsor, not to the relatives being reunited.

This rule applies to the general residence permits. Families of Spanish citizens follow a separate set of rules, and some special permits, such as the remote work permit, let family members come with the main applicant from the start under their own procedures.

Who can join you

The regulations list the family members who can be reunited:

  1. A spouse or partner. For an unregistered partner, the couple needs to show twelve months of living together, unless they have children together.
  2. Children, including the children of the spouse or partner, within the limits the law sets.
  3. Parents over 65 who depend on the sponsor, or younger ones when there are humanitarian reasons.

For families with mixed situations, such as children from a previous relationship or a partner without a marriage certificate, the details are where the planning happens. Families researching the family reunification visa Spain route often find that the documents proving the relationship take longer to gather than the financial ones.

Money, housing and insurance

The sponsor has to show three things:

  1. Financial means. For a household of two, the requirement is 150 percent of a Spanish benchmark called the IPREM per month, plus 50 percent for each additional member. The amount can be reduced when minors are involved.
  2. Suitable housing. This is proven with a report from the regional or local government, which has one month to issue it.
  3. Health insurance for the family members.

Criminal record information from the police report is not, on its own, grounds for refusal. It is assessed case by case.

Deadlines, duration and work

The immigration office has two months to decide. If it does not answer in that time, the application is considered refused, so it is important to keep track of the date and act if the deadline passes.

Once granted, the family members’ permits last as long as the sponsor’s permit, with a minimum of one year. They also come with an important benefit: the reunited spouse or partner and children can work in Spain without any additional procedure. For many families, that changes the household budget from the first month.

A realistic timeline

Here is a typical sequence for a sponsor who arrived in Spain with a one-year permit:

  1. Months 1 to 10: settle in, keep your permit in good standing and start gathering family documents, such as birth and marriage certificates with apostilles and sworn translations.
  2. Months 10 to 12: file the renewal of your own permit in the window before it expires.
  3. After the renewal is filed: apply for family reunification, with the housing report and proof of means ready.
  4. After approval: your family applies for visas at the consulate and, once in Spain, for their identity cards.

Worth the wait

Family reunification asks for patience in the first year, but it rewards preparation. Start the documents early, keep your own permit on schedule and plan the housing report in advance. By the time you are eligible, the rest can move quickly.
